Description A Good W.W.2 Palestine, M.B.E. and M.I.D. group – Royal Army Ordnance Corps M.B.E. (2nd Type, Military).; General Service Medal 1918-62, clasps, Palestine, Malaya (Malay is loose on ribbon) 7585423 Sjt . W. M. Howard . R.A.O.C.; 1939-45 Star; Africa Star; France and Germany Star; Defence Medal;1939-45 War Medal (M.I.D. Oakleaf) – Swing mounted as worn. William Melville Leon Howard was born in Birchington, Kent on the 9th August 1912, born into a Military family. Mentioned in Despatches – London Gazette, 26th July 1940 (Palestine) M.B.E. – London Gazette 1st April 1941 (Palestine) Original recommendation: “This Warrant Officer has displayed an unremitting devotion to duty which has set an example to all ranks. He has performed, with marked success, the duties of chief Clerk to the Assistant-Director of Ordnance Services (Provision), such duties occupying his attention for an average of 14 hours per day, His tact, cheerfulness, complete knowledge of his duties, and his encouragement of others, have won the admiration and respect of all ranks.” 27.11.40 No 4 Base Ordnance Depot. He enlisted in the R.A.O.C. aged 18 being stationed in Aldershot from 1930 to 36, serving in the Middle East from them upto 1943, serving in Palestine and Syria with the 9th Army, where he was awarded his M.B.E. He married in January 1944, and in June took part in the D-Day landings, filling a senior Ordnance position in the Hannover Garrison where his wife joined him until 1947. They returned to Stanmore until 1950. He then moved to Wem, Shropshire for 3 years, before moving to Japan in 1953, then on to Singapore, again returning to Stanmore in 1957, serving as a Staff Officer there before retiring as a Major in 1962. With a great selection of original documents and photographs, including various letters, his Redbook, passes / ID cards, photo album and a had written account of his fathers life and a typed reading which appears to have been given at his funeral, etc Condition – NEF
